1975 Guild D-35SB (Sunburst).

This one was factory-ordered with a double pickguard and I love it.

It’s lived quite a life, but is free of any breaks or repairs and comes with a well-travelled case + the original hang tag.

2013 Gibson Les Paul Signature T.

This one has a lovely AA flamed maple top beneath a rich Wine Red finish. Big Lucy vibes!

2011 Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar.

A first-year model, rare for being both factory roadworn and a lefty.

I love the attention to detail on these - note the Gotoh tuners alongside factory-drilled holes for Klusons (just like Kurt’s).

Loaded with a bound real rosewood board and Dimarzio pickups, this model is about as close to the original as one can get.

A quirky little Euro-made entry level guitar, which was a staple offering at Selmer during the decade.

Swipe to see it featured in a 60s Selmer catalogue where it retailed for a mere 25 Guineas (George Harrison’s model 3, pictured left, retailed for 45 Guineas at the time).

It came with this (somewhat tatty) case, which I believe it would’ve been supplied with at the time.

For your consideration, a 1965 Epiphone Olympic Double model.

This is the lesser-seen double pickup variant of the Olympic, Epiphone’s answer to the Gibson Melody Maker (both being made at the same premises in Kalamazoo, Michigan).

Vibrant Cherry Finish, beautiful doublecut mahogany body and by this period of course, a ‘batwing’ headstock.

Frankly, these sound nothing like anything within the wider Gibson electric family. Structurally, it’s much like an SG Junior / Coronet, etc. However, the pickups are single coil, which make for a distinctively un-Gibson like tone. And further, they’re not quite like their contemporaries in Fender et al - they feel naturally wanting in low end (which can be remedied by rolling the tone off a tad). The result: a pretty unique sound, expanded only further by the inclusion of two of these single coils (rather than the usual lone bridge pickup) making for a fair variety of tonal options.

My opinion? Love it.

The eagle-eyed among you may notice something strange about this picture.

I had a fully-loaded ‘62 Harmony Rocket body whose neck was sadly beyond repair. I paired it with a same year (and of course, same factory/templates) Silvertone 1454 bound/block inlayed neck, completing a rather handsome guitar indeed.

Sold, but too cool not to post.

A 60s Maton DC 545 model thinline hollow body, made in Australia 🇦🇺

This is my first experience with Maton and it’s been a wonderful one. The timbers available to Australian builders during this period are unparalleled - just look at that beautiful, flamed maple top.

Complete with its original hard case.

A top-of-the-line 70s Guild, sitting just below the F-50. I love vintage Guilds; they’re comfortably the same quality as their USA contemporaries while almost always sitting at far more competitive price point. A lot of vintage acoustic for the money!

1965 Baldwin (Burns) Baby Bison Bass.

A super cool 60s short scale with thump for days.

Personally, I find this one’s design pretty forward-thinking for the period. The dramatic cutaways, chrome and colour scheme all scream 70s/80s to me, despite being built in England circa 1965.

60s Burns guitars are (unjustly) slept on in the vintage market. I find that more often than not, they’ll readily go toe-to-toe with their American contemporaries and always sound phenomenal. Hank had the right idea!

Wind back to the mid 20th century and Fender weren’t producing a hollowbody electric guitar. To fill this void, management struck a deal with Harmony (Chicago) to produce instruments under the ‘Regal’ moniker. The partnership was brief, ending in the mid-60s with the introduction of the Coronado model.

Make no mistake - these were Harmony instruments through and through, with this model being structurally identical to a H-75. The only differences were cosmetic, notably the truss rod cover - which if I’m not mistaken, was constructed of the same 3-ply as a Stratocaster pickguard.

The majority of which were left blank - however, a very select few received Fender branding! I’ve found a picture of what I believe is this exact guitar in the 60s, confirming that this was a factory feature. It even had a black factory Fender ‘F’ branded pickguard, which has sadly been lost to time.

A beautiful instrument in its own right, if not a great piece of 60s guitar history.

I’ve had the pleasure of owning a few of these and they never disappoint.

Dating from 1974 - I believe the first year that the pickguards were changed to black, rather than tortoiseshell.

This one went quickly and it’s easy to see why.

From the first year of issue, being Guild’s highest-end electric offering at the time. No expense was spared in the construction of these models, featuring an ebony fingerboard, all gold hardware and a Guild branded Bigsby.

This one is all original save for the (long lost) pick guard. Though sad that is, its absence really reveals that gorgeous Cherry Red, flamed maple top.

A beautiful jumbo 12 string with a huge, huge sound. Complete with original hard case and tooled western Martin strap.

The current iteration of this guitar retails at £2475. For this mint and wonderfully mellowed 11 year old model, I’m asking £1495.

In the case of this guitar, just about everything dates to ‘78 apart from the body serial sticker, which denotes it physically left the factory in ‘81.

Super limited (1/250) Hutchins Brian Jones Tribute Teardrop model, with original tweed case and COA.

A nice collaboration dating from 2008 which sought to honour the legendary model played by the man himself.

It features the iconic teardrop body shape, matching white paddle headstock and a signature motif to the pickguard.

This is number 164, a nice coincidental nod to a great year for the Stones (and music in general, of course).

Here it comes…
