Super rare Vox Phantom IV model bass guitar, made in Italy (1967).

A super rare Vox bass, I believe made only from 1967-68. This model is unique for being the first to feature Vox's onboard effects, namely a screaming (and working!) distortion/fuzz switch and a treble/bass booster switch. It also features an on board 'G' tuner - which is currently disconnected (and not of much utility to a modern player, anyway).

This model  was favoured by Bill Wyman and he can be seen playing one in the notorious 'Rock and Roll Circus' special. Just about the skinniest neck I've ever come across. I believe these models used the same profile as the Bill Wyman Signature bass being produced at the time - snooker cue profile!

Complete and original, save for a removed pickguard and missing the Gretsch-type back cover.

Specs:

  • On board distortion circuit, powered by 9v battery (accessed at back)
  • Treble/bass booster switch
  • Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard
  • Super slim Bill Wyman profile neck
  • Ornate Vox tailpiece

Condition:

In fair used condition for a near 60 year old Vox bass. There is heavy (non-structural) lacquer checking to the heavy poly finish, which is a common feature of Italian-made guitars of the 60s (e.g, Eko etc). The hardware has heavy tarnishing to the chrome-style coatings but is all fully functional. Numerous dings, marks and playing wear throughout - but no breaks, repairs or serious damage. Control knobs chipped - but original, and very rare! As above, the fuzz and bass boost switches are working, starting at 0 with a light distortion, hitting a screaming fuzz at 10. The G tuner is on a separate circuit and disconnected/untested.

Modifications/repairs:

Some replaced screws, missing pickguard and back cover. G tuner disconnected.

Accessories:

None.
