Ampeg VT-22 model 100w guitar amplifier, dating from 1975.

A huge amp, both in sound and weight - best known as the model used in the studio by Keith Richards from Exile On Main Street onwards - throughout the 70s (though not this exact amp, of course).

I sourced this one from Northern Ireland, where it had been sat dormant for many decades. It is just back from Coopersonic Nottingham (the best in the business) who brought it back to life and it's now sounding incredible, albeit too loud for me!

Specs:

  • Country of origin: USA
  • Date of manufacture: 1975
  • 100w of power
  • 2x original 12' Ampeg speakers
  • 2x channels
  • 2x inputs
  • 3 band EQ with mid and treble switches
  • On board reverb

Condition:

Very used condition, but fully functional. Structurally sound and with regard to hardware, largely original save for 2 replaced knobs.

With regard to circuitry, Martin at Coopersonic carried out the following work:

  • Test all valves
  • Clean all pots, sockets and switches
  • 4x 5881WXT (used)
  • 1x 6CG7 (NOS)
  • 1x 7025 (EH)
  • 1x ECC83 (Marshall, used)
  • 1x 12DW7 (EH)
  • Re-form can capacitors
  • New tagstrip for mains wiring; remove “death” cap, polarity switch
  • Proper chassis earth bond; disconnect 100V outlet
  • Replace 6x 2W resistor, 2x 1⁄2W resistor
  • Replace bias supply capacitors 2x 22uF 100V axial
  • Add resistors and cap for raising heater voltage
  • Add variable bias control
  • Set bias and hum balance
  • Repairs to broken internal wiring
  • Repairs to speaker wiring
  • Repairs to reverb tank
  • PAT test, 5A plug fuse, T3A 32mm fuse
  • 2x generic knob; various missing hardware, hole stopper
  • Glue Tolex

As such, it's now working fabulously! Huge sound and a variety of tonal combinations to be had from the various switches  - you can see why Keith favoured these.

Collection/delivery:

Collection heavily preferred due to weight / delicateness. However, I'm prepared to have it sent anywhere within a reasonable span of the UK mainland by Lenspeed Logistics (Len is the best in the business - an ex-roadie who knows how to handle musical gear properly. I'd recommend him for any job of this size!). I will need to book this in with him based on availability / to coordinate a delivery date, so please allow for a little time to book this in and get the amp safely to you!
